Just recently, Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens has been accused of having a ten year affair.
Mindy McCready, a well known country musician has reportedly had a sexual relationship with Clemens since she was 15. Clemens was a 28 year old pitcher for the Red Sox and was married with two children.
McCready and Clemens have been long time family friends. They did spend time together ten years ago, but both deny ever having a sexual or romantic relationship. If it is true about the affair, Clemens will look terrible to fans and people everywhere. Roger Clemens is already being accused of steroid use and the affair would add to the drama surrounding him.
It’s unfortunate that Roger Clemens is involved in all of these accusations. His career is playing professional baseball and that is what both him and his fans should be focused on.

Clemens in trouble again

Baseball legend Roger Clemens is in hot water…again. This past week, the New York Daily News reported that Clemens has had an ongoing affair with country singing star Mindy McCready, who was 15 years old when they first met.
Three days later, McCready tearfully confirmed that the recent allegations were true.
Ever since the release of the Mitchell Report, the reputation of man who was once thought to be a first ballot hall-of-famer has diminished to almost nothing. At the moment, Clemens is being investigated for perjury by the FBI and is also involved in a defamation lawsuit against former athletic trainer Brian McNamee. The lawsuit claims that McNamee greatly damaged Clemens’ reputation. Up to this point, the Rocket had tried to prove to have a reputation as a “family man”. However, this story shows that this is quite the opposite.

Beloved Superstar Miley Cyrus sheds clothing and innocence

Michael Jackson, Macaulay Culkin, Brittany Spears, Lindsay Lohan , ….Miley Cyrus?
Child stars that are overwhelmed and ambushed by superstardom have proven to eventually crash and burn. The recent out of control behavior, drug abuse, and sex scandals from Brittany Spears and Lindsey Lohan, are sad but true evidence to this theory. The public can not help but wonder if the beloved actor of Disney’s hit series Hannah Montana will follow in these footsteps.
15 year old Miley Cyrus recently released scandalous photos in Vanity Fair magazine. These were preceding the leak of half naked MySpace photos of her. These racy photographs left the public stunned and paparazzi in paradise. Who would have guessed that this supposedly innocent child role model would pose naked for a magazine?
Condé Nast Portfolio magazine recently estimated that Cyrus will be worth approximately 1 billion dollars by the time she is 18, making her one of the biggest child stars since Shirley Temple. She has two multi-platinum records and is the youngest performer to have two number one albums within 12 months.
Miley was quoted by Vanity Fair magazine June issue, saying that she has not had more than one day off sine 2006 and has not attended a regular school since sixth grade.
I can not help but think how this hectic lifestyle and being worshiped by teens everywhere will affect her.
Miley living in an extremely abnormal environment and surrounded by pure Hollywood chaos can only have a negative affect on her. She needs to stay grounded and if possible attend a private school and get tutored when she tours. If Miley continues living deprived from the outside world, than superstardom will consume her sane mind.
Many people say that her father keeps her grounded and that he is a loving and caring person. The Vanity Fair magazine released a press statement that Miley’s photos were taken in front of her parents, who were encouraging bystanders. There is no doubt that Miley’s father loves her. However, it is outrageous that he would not only approve of these naked shots, more the less encourage them. There is something wrong here.
I know what it is like to be a fifteen year old girl and living in the pressures of society. It involves juggling a muddled lifestyle and bodily changes; each day you become more and more obsessed with being sickly thin and impressing boys become the main purpose of life.
However, Miley’s innocence and ability to shed these pressures are what make her so appealing to the public. Her reputation as a composed and gracious teen makes her a positive role model for teenagers. Miley needs to uphold these expectations because she has millions of young viewers who look up to her. They are mirroring her every move, from sporting blond wigs to adding “sweet nibblets” to their vocabulary.
Miley has issued an apology explaining, "The pictures of me on the Internet were silly, inappropriate shots. I appreciate all the support of my fans, and hope they understand that along the way I am going to make mistakes and I am not perfect. I never intended for any of this to happen, and I am truly sorry if I have disappointed anyone.”
Cyrus’s apology was a good move to save her reputation. Hopefully, Miley will in fact learn from her mistakes and steer clear of negative publicity.

A legion of Pembroke’s best

After over two years of fighting and court cases, the town of Pembroke now has a legion team to call its own. Post 143 will be the region that Pembroke will play in; some of the other teams that Pembroke will play are Hanover, Kingston, and Norwell.
A main figure responsible for Pembroke having a legion team is Greg Hanley, Pembroke’s Chairman. Hanley has fought from day 1 for Pembroke to have a Legion Team to call their own.
“[Pembroke] has one of the best youth baseball programs around”, said Greg Hanley “and I thought it was time for Pembroke to have a legion team of their own.”
Legion baseball is for ballplayers that are fourteen to twenty years old, and hope to play baseball at the next level. The goal of legion is for the “players to learn the importance of teamwork, discipline, leadership and good sportsmanship” according to www.baseball.legion.org.
Creating a legion team in Pembroke will give more local talent a chance to play legion ball. Before Pembroke created its own team, Pembroke ballplayers were forced to play for other nearby towns, such as Hanover or Kingston. Because of this, several local kids either didn’t or couldn’t play legion ball, but now they will get a chance.
“The other teams in Post 143 didn’t want Pembroke to have a team of their own”, said Greg Hanley, “They claimed that we wouldn’t be competitive, but I think the some of the best players in Post 143 come from Pembroke.”
The coach of the legion team will be Peter Plant, formerly coach of the AAU team the Terriers and coach of the Pembroke Babe Ruth 15 All-Stars.
Coach Peter Plant said, “Our goal this year is to be 500 (a 50% winning percentage) and be competitive in every game that we play.”

Within the past few weeks, the world has learned yet another thing about Roger Clemens that we really should not care about. It has been reported that Roger and country star Mindy McCready were involved in a decade long relationship that began when she was a 15-year-old aspiring singer. At that time Clemens was a 28 year old ace pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, with a wife and two children. Clearly this is extremely immoral, but nothing has been completely proven yet. Rusty Hardin, Clemens' lawyer, claims that they were friends and still are, but that it was never sexual. The daily news received this information from an anonymous source, which means it cannot be said to be a fact. His lawyer says Roger's wife knew that they were friends, and that it never once turned inappropriate. But, Roger did apparently send cash to McCready to help her with legal issues and reached out to her when she was in jail last year in Tennessee. This causes it to seem very suspicious. All of this is very alarming and questionable, however it has nothing to do with his baseball career or ongoing defamation suit the former pitcher has filed against his former personal trainer Brian McNamee.
If the allegation is true, Clemens will be publicly embarrassed in front of the world. This is a situation that is slightly disturbing, since she was only 15 years old at the supposed start of the relationship, while he was 28. Clearly it is wrong, but it is straight up none of our business. There is absolutely no reason for this to have been released other than the fact to humiliate Roger Clemens. The people who leaked this story are going way beyond their own limits. They definitely should have told Roger's family, because his wife has the right to know, but not the entire world. Also, it now puts Roger in a hole for his case against Brian McNamee because they will use this to question his credibility and attempt to say that he is a liar. This is why Roger Clemens should now be afraid what is to come in his defamation suit.
Personally I think it’s down right gross and messed up that Roger would have any sexual feelings toward a 15 year old girl, possibly in her first years of high school, while he was almost 30. If the statue of limitations was not exceeded, he could be charged with rape and instead of his tag as a CY Young legendary pitcher, he would be called a pedophile. I believe nobody in the world should care about Roger’s personal life, for the exception of his wife, friends, and family. The bottom line though is Roger screwed up once again, and he himself is going to pay for it. He looks like a liar and fraud, and what was it all for; a little girl and a faster pitch.

The battle against global warming

Earth Day is fast approaching and less than a week away. Most students in PHS are familiar with the term “global warming”. However, rather than taking direct action PHS will go on vacation and maybe even add an Earth Day specialty meal on their lunch menu.
It is of grave importance for PHS and everyone in general to take a stand on global warming; an Earth Day should not be needed to inspire action as it should be an everyday battle to save our planet. It is true that PHS holds school activities such as the Recycling Club. However, this may be far too little, too late for such a drastic problem occurring in our world right now.
The evidence is right in everyone’s back yards. Most teachers in PHS can remember back to times when Pembroke was completely covered in blankets of snow even in April. As recent as only three years ago, PHS was out of school a whole week due to a blizzard. This year as well as the previous, PHS only had one snow day for the whole year. It certainly seems that there is less and less snow every year.
Behind the physical evidence, the scientific evidence also backs the need for action now. Just since 1970, average winter temperatures in New England have risen 4.4 degrees. This has caused spring to start a whole week or two earlier. The IPCC has speculated this number to rise up to another 11.5 degrees over the next 50 years.
Most people know that global warming, in all probability, will contribute to a rise in sea levels, specie extinctions, and extreme weather events. However, more people could become won over for the cause if they heard that mosquitoes are one of the creatures that most highly benefit from the warming climate as they are multiplying in greater numbers and spreading more disease.
PHS desperately needs to make a stand on the issue. Posters and other forms of propaganda need to be created to send the message across to everybody. Students need to be informed on what they can do to help. Assemblies need to be held to let students know that they can do simple things such as drive less or raise their voices on the issue to raise awareness and create a positive change.

The Pembroke Express wins readers with the inaugural issue

The Pembroke community can welcome a new paper to circulation. The Pembroke Express sent out its inaugural issue last Friday April 11. Free for the first two weeks, the Express is a weekly newspaper that, like the Mariner, lands in your mailbox every Friday afternoon.
Unlike the Mariner however, the Express offers a look inside Pembroke High School and its academic activities, featuring a spread about Mr. Battista’s economics class and their silent auction in the first issue. It also covers sports with many large pictures and chooses an athlete of the month. The Express has chosen to include many graphics, large pictures, and feature stories as well as covering politics, and all news pertaining to the community. Making themselves more of a magazine, as opposed to just trying to cover straight news, makes them more of a value as a weekly paper, not unlike the Sentinel, our monthly publication.
Another piece that is of interest is the police log, which after three semesters of journalism, I’d never seen before, and many of my classmates had not either, but apparently is one of the most popular places for residents to look to see what’s been going on around town.
The Express is also offering up opportunities to young newshounds who want to write and take photos. With the journalism program growing in size and the Sentinel improving each month, it’s good for students to have other outlets especially after they’ve already taken editorial journalism.
So far, the Express has been quick to cover events, and take tips they get from students, teachers, and other community members about events taking place.
Also, the competition between the Mariner/Reporter and the Express will keep both papers on their toes, covering as much as they can, especially involving students, to keep selling subscriptions.
The Express strives to be the towns “community newspaper” and after their first issue are off to a good start. With the inaugural issue, however, it gives you the impression that it’s free every week, but it’s only for the first two weeks, then either you’ll stop receiving it or if you’ve filled out the subscription card, will continue receiving it for a price. The Express is run by a company called the Clipper Press, and is out to make a profit, like any other business.
