Advance Placement programs overload students with work

by Lauren Hanley

The advanced placement program is administered by The College Board of New York and is designed to be taught as a higher level course, comparable to a freshman collage class. As a result, due to the level of difficulty, keeping up with these vigorous courses require extensive time and effort.
One may wonder why someone would want to put themselves through such a demanding course. One may further wonder why someone would want to take more than one of these A.p classes.
The idea of an advanced placement class was to accommodate students who had a passion for a certain subject, and were bored in honors classes. It was not meant to be a competition on how many a student can handle before crashing. However, more and more students around the world feel that it is necessary to overload them with A.p courses, in order to compete with surrounding peers.
I am outraged that high school students are being expected to manage a hectic lifestyle of sports, peer pressures, and work, and now in addition to taking collage classes. The stress of managing these vigorous courses with leave students burnt out; unhealthy habits will develop such as lack of sleep, overeating, and cheating in order to cope. High schoolers are going to be done with collage before they even get there.
As a result, student should have a limit each year on how many A.P classes one can take. I should be a world-wide limit, so it would eliminate competition and overwhelming stress. Therefore, students will be able to work hard but still live a healthy and happy lifestyle.
You only live one, so why would you want to kill yourself?
